Monroe, Connecticut Quick Facts: Land area is approximately 26 Square Miles and the elevation is 64 feet. Incorporated in 1823, Monroe currently has about 19,500 residents in 6,500 households, 92% of which are owner occupied. Approximately 10.6% of the housing stock built prior to 1950. Quiet and appealing, Monroe was named after the fifth president of United States, James Monroe, this town was originally part of Stratford. This historic and scenic Connecticut  town has some beautiful vistas and rolling hills along with "woodsy' areas that give it a rural feel, although its location lends itself well for commuters, as the majority of employed townsfolk commute to lower Fairfield County for work.

Monroe has ranked in the top 5% in the state for the lowest median age of its residents, and impressive feat for a small town. Although incorporated in 1823, it feels like a newer town. This town has seen a couple of growth spurts. There are really just two shopping areas, which are situated on two state routes that run through the town. You'll see historical homes near Town Hall and surrounding the town green on Route 111, yet commerce and industry are neatly tucked away off Route 25.

Careful planning has enabled Monroe to maintain its rural feel, even while new subdivisions keep popping up, and new shopping plazas keep coming. The developments have all been tastefully implemented. On the recreational side, there is a public 18 hole Golf Course and catering facility, plus Wolfe Park, the major community recreational attraction here which offers over 300 acres of parkland, fields, swimming, and trails. There is an active historical society, a vintage car club, and a down home country atmosphere that will warm anyone's heart.
